The holidays are a time of celebration. Reminiscing with family and friends over the previous year and sharing this special time of year with them is important to many Americans. In getting to that point, it takes some work on your part in sprucing up your home and getting it fit for guests to stay in comfort. We have some tips and suggestions to make your home holiday ready.
- Your guests have most likely traveled to get there. They will be tired and anxious to relax. A well-maintained entrance is a great way to greet them. Spruce up the entrance by adding a fresh coat of paint around the doorway if it is chipped. Or, power wash the front porch to get rid of dirt, dust, and grime. A clean, tidy front porch is a welcome sight to weary travelers. Pretty it up by adding potted plants, a holiday wreath, and, if there is room, a cozy bench. Make sure the front porch is well lit in the evening. Don’t forget a nice welcome mat for them to wipe their feet!
- Ensure that the foyer is clear of clutter to make room for receiving your guests. They will want to put down their suitcases without having to move backpacks and shoes.
- The guest bedroom should be warm, inviting, clean, and very comfortable. Make sure that prior to their arrival that they have fresh sheets, plenty of blankets and pillows, proper lighting, window treatments for privacy, and a bench, if possible, to unpack their suitcase. Other additional things that you could do to create a welcome environment is to have a television available in their room, place a mini refrigerator in their closet stocked with water, pop, and snacks, and a nice, fluffy robe hanging in the closet. They will be so cozy; they might just want to stay longer than intended!
- The guest bathroom should be clean and tidy. It is a good idea to have towels out on the counter top for their use. Also, a nice touch is to set a basket with amenities that they could have forgotten to pack such as a toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, hand soap, razor, etc. Even just trial sizes work well.
It is fun to get ready for the holidays with decorating and planning the meals. Do not get so caught up in those preparations that you forget to prepare for your guests. With the guest accommodations taken care of, you are free to wrap your presents, baste the turkey, and enjoy the family chatter of the holiday.
