With the holidays coming up, we are all going through the stacks of bins with Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas decorations in them. A lot of us here in Florida store these items in our garages since we do not have basements. Since you are already going through the holiday decor, this is the perfect time to organize your garage!
Garages in Florida usually double as storage areas as well unless you have a shed or attic that has room for your extra stuff. Families can accumulate a lot of things that is easy to just throw out into the garage until you can figure out where it should go in the house. Fall is a great time to tackle those piles!
- Clean: the first step to organizing your garage is to clean it out. Yes, this takes some time, but it is well worth the effort and time involved. Place items into groups such as gardening tools, sports equipment, tools and hardware, holiday decorations, items for your car, household repair items, and trash. Really, really ask yourself what you need and have used within the past couple of years. If it is just collecting dust, then pitch it in the garbage to create room for something that you will use.
- Map Garage: take some time to figure out where these groupings of items will be placed in the garage. You will want things that you use daily or weekly within reach such as garbage cans and kids’ sports equipment. Other things that are only used once a year should be placed up and out of the way. Make sure that you take into account space to park your car.
- Containers: it is not safe and very messy-looking to have parts and pieces thrown around the garage. Invest in some cabinetry, shelving, bins, and hangers for bicycles to “hide” and organize your items. If you have a lot of containers, label them so that you can identify the contents of each container within a glance.
