Feng Shui: Meaningful Room Colors
Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese practice of balancing energies in rooms to create harmony and a healthy environment. The term “Feng Shui” literally translates to “Wind Water”. The Chinese belief is that good health and good fortune are based on the wind and water. There are many aspects to creating a good Feng Shui in your home and one of those is color.
These ancient theorists assign specific colors to each room in a home to improve the balance of the energies. The Five Elements Theory designates color as a basis to Feng Shui. Each one is connected to one of the five elements of the world: earth, fire, metal, water, and wood. The theory is that if you paint a room a specific color that it will create a more physical and spiritually harmonious environment for the inhabitant. Here we will break each color down by room:
Earth tones such as beige, yellows, gold, and bright colors help to “ground” the energy of a kitchen. Since kitchens use the fire and water elements, earth tone colors will keep everything grounded. Your kitchen is a happy place, so using bright uplifting colors is recommended. Not recommended: red, navy blue, dark green, dark brown.
Bedrooms are meant to be a restful, peaceful place in your home. Create that calm environment with muted pastels. The soothing tones of pastel blue and light green do well in rooms where you want a relaxed feeling. Stay away from reds and purples since those are “fire” colors and may interrupt rest. Very dark colors should be avoided as well.
Since bathrooms already have the water element, blues are to be avoided. That would create too much water. Earth colors will balance out the water energy. Use beiges, whites, and pastels for harmony in the five elements.
Main Living Areas
It is important to bring the natural world into your living areas. So, yellow, beiges, tans, and whites are recommended. These bring stability to the room. When using colors that are neutral such as these, decorate with various textures and layers to create interest.
Use this as a guide, but the main thing to remember is that you should select the color that makes YOU happy. Which colors invoke a good feeling within you? You should surround yourself with the colors that make you the happiest. Home is where you create your sanctuary away from the world. Make it special for you and your family!
