Mouldings from the Ground Up!

Mouldings from the Ground Up!

There is something to be said about those rooms that you walk into and they have the extra moulding details. It feels like the owner had a complete thought to the style of that room. There are many types of mouldings and thousands of profiles to select from for your project. Below, we will give you a basic overview of what type of mouldings you can use in your rooms, from the ground up to the ceiling!

  1. First and foremost are Baseboards. Most everyone is familiar with what a baseboard is and what it looks like. But, for those who don’t, a baseboard is a piece of wood or polyurethane moulding, that runs along the bottom of the wall. This hides any imperfections between the wall and the floor and also gives a nice finish to the bottom of the wall. Baseboards are typically either stained or painted white. There are many profiles and sizes, although 4” – 5” height is pretty standard.

  1. Next up the wall is the Chair Rail. Chair rails are a decorative piece of wood that is placed horizontally on the wall to protect the wall from chairs set up against it. Some folks decide to add wainscoting or bead board below the chair rail to both protect the wall and for the aesthetic rewards.

  1. Door casings are next on the list. Door casings provide a frame around doors, which continues that “finished” look in the room. You can also apply casing to an opening without a door and around windows. Casings are normally stained or painted the same color as the baseboards.

  1. Picture rails are even higher on the wall, running horizontally and lined up with the tops of the windows in the room. Historically, they were used to hang pictures since the walls could not bear the weight of framed pictures and they saved the wall from ugly nail holes. Nowadays, picture rails are installed mainly for decorative purposes.

  1. Lastly, to finish off the wall, we get to crown moulding. Crown moulding is a decorative piece or pieces of wood placed where the wall and the ceiling meet. Crown molding can be simple or dramatic depending on your taste.
