What is Plexiglass and How Can I Use It?
Plexiglass is a brand name for a thermoplastic polymer that is very lightweight and transparent. It is a durable substance that weathers easily and can be shaped using heat. Anywhere you would use glass, this material can be applied as well.
Plexiglass can used for many applications because it is so malleable. You can cut it using your common woodworking tools. A few products that are made from it are picture frames, aquariums, greenhouses, video screens, skylights, furniture, food storage, basketball hoop back, and display cases.
The properties that make plexiglass such a popular replacement of glass is mainly due to the following:
- Durability: it is very difficult to shatter plexiglass, although it scratches easily. Ammonia can break down its composition, so a mild detergent is best used in cleaning anything made from it.
- Weight: it is a lightweight material, so shipping and handling is a lot easier than that of glass.
- Cutting: it is made in sheets and, because it is softer than glass, can be cut a lot easier than glass. Due to this property, it is able to be used in many applications.
- Dull: because plexiglass does not have the shine that glass does, it is used on aquariums, hockey rinks and display cases so that the items inside can be viewed without a glare.
