The Importance of a Well Insulated Florida Home
When building a home in Florida insulation should be an important consideration in the building plan. Proper insulation of course helps to regulate the temperature in your home, but it also adds an additional sound barrier, moisture barrier and helps to keep pollutants and even allergens out of the living environment.
Though we have very mild winters here in South West Florida, summers can become extreme in temperature with heat indexes well over 100 degrees. It is not unusual for a roof surface temperature to reach 190 degrees. Because the sun here is this strong as it beats down on the roof it absorbs though the roof and into the attic (or crawl space, more commonly here in Florida). Having effective insulation can prevent that heat from traveling into the living spaces, forcing your air conditioner to work harder, spiking your electric bill.
Having a well-insulated house is not only far more comfortable it is also far more affordable keeping your air conditioner spurred electrical bill in check.
Fiber Glass – Comes in blanket rolls or spray.Fiberglass loose-fill insulation is made from molten glass that is spun or blown into fibers. Most manufacturers’ use 20% to 30% recycled glass content. It can be purchased in medium or high density.
Thermal Reflective Insulation – works as the name implies. It reflects the heat back out/up. Made of metal of varied types. This is a thin barrier layer additional to other types of insulation used. It may also be sold in combination products with a thick layer of insulation backed by a reflective insulator.
Styrofoam Insulation – Much in the same way a Styrofoam coffee cup is able to keep your favorite morning beverage hot, blocks or sheet of Styrofoam are able to regulate temperature within a structure.
Homasote Structural Fiber Board – This 98% recycled green material is ideal for soundproofing insulation.
By using less energy for heating and cooling, you are reducing your carbon footprint and helping environmentally on a global scale as well.
