Going GREEN with Shell Lumber
Building today isn’t the same as it was in years past. Renewable and recyclable resources have become a focus. Choosing to “Go Green” when you first start a project changes the entire game. Up until now it has been a bit of a challenge, having to piecemeal orders together from varied venders in order to get materials that are approved and certified as “Green”.
Here at Shell Lumber & Hardware made a conscious decision to be part of the solution rather than part of the problem. We are proud to be the first lumber yard in Miami to take this step in becoming a certified green dealer making us a one stop shop for all that is green.
What does it mean to “Build Green”?
Building Green is more than just using green products. It’s about creating and maintaining environmentally friendly, energy efficient healthy structures to live and work in.
What is the difference when planning on building Green?
A lot of thought goes in to Green designing. Starting right from the most basic element of all.
Location – Walking distance from schools and stores is often considered to eliminate the need to drive everywhere.
Size – is also considered. How much space is really required? Many homes in the past few decades have become exaggerated in size and extra rooms often house nothing more than clothing or furniture.
Light & Ventilation – are huge in green designs. In green designs natural light should be able to reach 75% of the home’s interior. Mold resistant drywall is used due to the opening of doors and windows in season and a good HVAC system is installed to ensure air flow as well.
Insulation – is no longer standard fiberglass, which can contain formaldehyde. Nontoxic alternatives of cotton or soy are usually utilized.
Windows and doors – should be energy star rated.
Maximize water efficiency – by collecting rainwater and grey water recycling.
Using Energy Efficient Products – such as Energy Star Rated appliances, tankless water heaters, and compact fluorescent bulbs are mandated to be Green compliant. Additionally, no VOC paints or sealants are to be used. Source renewable or sustainable wood and use recycles materials when possible.
Green-Scaping your yard is also part of the process. Shade trees help with energy efficiency and making sure that you install native plants which tolerate all seasons well can keep your water bill in check.
