WHAT ARE VOC’S AND ARE THEY HARMFUL?
Shell Lumber & Hardware currently houses the largest supply of “No VOC” and “Low VOC” products that you can find anywhere. But what exactly is a VOC?
VOC stands for volatile organic compound, and you most likely encounter a few types of VOC’s every day of your life and within your very own home. VOC’s are found in gas or vapor form at room temperature, which is why they are easily dispersed throughout households and why you might not have any idea that they are there at all. They can be human-produced or naturally occurring, and tend to give off unpleasant scents or odors, although these odors may develop so slowly over time that they simply slip by and remain unnoticed until they start making your family and pets sick.
When VOC’s are produced by humans, they tend to come about as a result of the use of certain products and materials – cleaning products, paints, adhesives, and building materials, just to name a few. And while some VOC’s are completely harmless to humans, others, like formaldehyde, can cause serious illness and irritation in the human body. Immediate symptoms of extended VOC exposure include headaches, vomiting, skin rashes, nose bleeds, fatigue, and dizziness, with some VOC’s also having been linked to respiratory illness, severe allergies, and immune disorders, as well as certain forms of cancer in both humans and animals.
The best thing you can do to reduce your exposure to such compounds is to only use products labeled as “Low VOC” or “No VOC.” In addition, you should only buy as much of a product as you will need at one time, as stockpiling these materials and chemicals for later use will only result in added air pollution within your home. As an added measure of safety when using products containing VOC’s, make sure you are working in a well ventilated area and that you take frequent breaks for fresh air.
